Do statues die, too?

Do statues die, too?

A critical review of museums and colonialism

On the 70th anniversary of the short film Les statues meurent aussi, the MUEC offers this reflection as a temporary exhibition curated by the anthropologist, filmmaker and university professor Roger Canals.

It is a contemporary review and reading of the controversial documentary, which premiered in 1957 and spoke of colonial-decolonial processes related to art that are today a typical scenario. Is it legal to admire pieces we do not understand in a decontextualized environment? What do we know by exoticism? What differentiates art from craft?

The graphics we have meticulously crafted, both within the exhibition space and in the different communication pieces, offer a contemporary lens on the passage of time. They are not just a visual representation, but a catalyst for reflection. They are based on the concept of evolution and change of perspectives, which allows for a comprehensive review and repair around, among others, the so-called primitive art.
